1. federations
According to Obi Nwosu, CEO of Fedi, speaking at La Casa de Satoshi in Mexico City, the company is pursuing a vision where "millions of small federations" operate globally rather than "one huge federation that everybody uses." Fedi combines Fedimint's federated custody protocol with Matrix-based encrypted messaging and a marketplace of bitcoin services called "mini apps," creating what Nwosu describes as "a private Bitcoin wallet" that offers exchange-level user experience without centralized custody risks. The architecture mirrors existing institutional custody practices, multisignature keys held by geographically distributed, anonymous guardians, but is engineered to run on commodity hardware at negligible cost for communities as small as extended families. Nwosu argues this "community custody" model fills the gap between daunting self-custody and regulated third-party services, particularly for groups operating below regulatory thresholds or within exemptions for closed-loop systems and corporate expense structures. Nwosu argues that bitcoin adoption accelerates when users "experience deflation" through gradually declining invoice amounts rather than receiving lectures on monetary theory.

According to a developer proposal circulating in Delving Bitcoin, wallet maintainers are exploring standardized methods for disposing of dust attack UTXOs by creating fee-only transactions with OP_RETURN outputs that consume the entire dust amount. The approach leverages Bitcoin Core 30's reduced minimum relay fee of 0.1 sats/vB, enabling transactions that meet the 82-byte minimum relay size while spending typical dust amounts between 250 and 350 satoshis at economically viable fee rates. The proposal acknowledges implementation risks including wallet fingerprinting if adoption remains narrow, timing correlation when broadcasting multiple dust disposals simultaneously, potential mempool purges during fee spikes requiring rebroadcast, and user experience friction with hardware signers and multisig setups. The mechanism addresses a persistent privacy vulnerability where adversaries seed watched addresses with 'dust' hoping users inadvertently merge them with unrelated UTXOs during normal spending, revealing common ownership patterns. While most modern wallets lock dust UTXOs by default, the discussed proposals aim to eliminate them entirely.

The Lightning Network has crossed 5,600 BTC in channel capacity, representing nearly $500 million in locked value, while transaction volume surged 266% year over year in 2025. Major exchanges including Binance, OKX, and Kraken now route withdrawals through Lightning, and Cash App reported a sevenfold usage increase in 2024. Steak 'n Shake, which integrated Lightning payments in May 2025, saw "a 50% reduction in payment processing fees," demonstrating concrete cost savings for merchants. Tether's announcement that it will launch USDT on Lightning via the Taproot Assets protocol transforms the network from bitcoin-only infrastructure into multi-asset settlement rails, addressing price volatility concerns for businesses seeking fast, low-cost transactions. Payment success rates in optimized deployments now exceed 99%, marking the shift from experimental technology to production ready infrastructure. The system that began with a humble developer paying a Swedish phone bill in 2017 now processes institutional volume.

Researchers from Google, the University of Chicago, and the Santa Fe Institute have discovered that advanced reasoning models like DeepSeek-R1 and QwQ-32B internally simulate multiple distinct personas to solve complex problems. The study finds that "enhanced reasoning emerges not from extended computation alone, but from the implicit simulation of complex, multi-agent-like interactions—a society of thought." The models spontaneously develop different conversational styles and perspective-taking behaviors when trained through reinforcement learning, with personas exhibiting distinct personality traits including creative ideators with high openness and semantic fidelity checkers with high neuroticism. In one mathematical puzzle, the model evolved from mechanical enumeration at step 40 to two collaborative personas using "we" pronouns by step 120. The findings validate the 2022 "simulator" hypothesis about language models and suggest these systems develop increasingly rich world models containing representations of other minds as they scale. This implies that advanced reasoning may fundamentally require internal perspective diversity rather than simply more computational power.
