According to the project’s whitepaper, the protocol creates “a decentralised, censorship-resistant, and publicly verifiable directory of payment codes” that removes single points of failure from the PayNym ecosystem. The effort traces directly to the April 2024 seizure of Samourai Wallet’s infrastructure, which exposed how dependent BIP47 users were on centralized directory servers for payment code discovery. The Ashigaru Open Source Project’s subsequent scramble to reconstruct the database made the vulnerability concrete. BIP47DB’s design supports permissionless publishing, client-side verification against the secp256k1 curve, and dual discovery via MIME type filtering and a canonical provably-unspendable deposit address.
