1. hardware
OpenSats has published an impact report on five open-source hardware projects it has funded across bitcoin mining and self-custody. Writing in OpenSats, Arvin and Tuma detail how Bitaxe, Bitshoka, Krux, Krux-Installer, and the 256 Foundation are collectively building an auditable, reproducible hardware stack that anyone can study and operate. Bitaxe project lead skot estimates that “over 100,000 Bitaxe units” have been sold, with solo miners using the open hardware to find at least six blocks to date. Bitshoka extends that design into local manufacturing in Kenya, adapting the Gamma board for African builders who face steep import costs and currency barriers. Krux turns inexpensive off-the-shelf boards into air-gapped signing devices and now supports Taproot, Miniscript, and an encrypted storage format for offline key backups. The 256 Foundation demonstrated a fully integrated open mining stack at a live Telehash fundraiser, assembling Ember One hashboards, flashing open firmware, and pointing hashrate to a self-hosted Hydra Pool instance. Taken together, these projects show that open hardware can cover every layer of the mining and self-custody stack, spreading design knowledge and manufacturing capacity beyond traditional supply chains.

White Noise, the encrypted group messaging app built by the Internet Privacy Foundation on Nostr and the Marmot Protocol, has cleared an independent security audit by Least Authority — a meaningful threshold for any open-source privacy tool positioning itself as a Signal alternative. The audit, completed on April 1, 2026, examined whitenoise-rs, the Rust backend powering White Noise’s Flutter client. Least Authority’s team identified ten issues, including medium-severity findings around relay-driven resource exhaustion, key package ownership bypass during group onboarding, and local MLS state advancing before relay confirmation. The final report notes that “overall, the findings indicate inconsistent enforcement of protocol invariants, as well as silent error propagation.” All ten issues were resolved before publication. White Noise combines MLS (Messaging Layer Security) with Nostr’s decentralized relay network, requiring no phone number, email, or central server. The clean audit result positions the project alongside established privacy tools that have undergone formal cryptographic review, and sets a baseline for the broader Marmot Protocol ecosystem as it targets interoperability across clients.

Lightning Network development continues with protocol improvements addressing scalability and user experience. Technical discussions among core developers shape the evolution of second-layer Bitcoin infrastructure, with innovations like L402 enabling agentic payments and autonomous commerce. These updates enhance the practical usability of Bitcoin for everyday transactions while maintaining the security guarantees of the base layer, moving closer to mainstream adoption of Bitcoin as a payments network. The ongoing refinement of Lightning channels and routing protocols demonstrates the commitment to making Bitcoin payments efficient and reliable for billions of daily transactions.

Educational initiatives expanding Bitcoin literacy across diverse audiences contribute to broader understanding of monetary sovereignty. Structured learning programs like the Bitcoin Diploma from My First Bitcoin prepare participants for participation in the Bitcoin economy through comprehensive curriculum and hands-on learning. These programs help demystify Bitcoin fundamentals and empower individuals with the knowledge needed to self-custody and participate in freedom-tech communities, building the next generation of informed Bitcoin users. By focusing on practical skills and philosophical foundations, education becomes the infrastructure layer that enables sustainable adoption and true decentralization of Bitcoin knowledge across global communities.
