1. endowment
Dartmouth College’s roughly $9 billion endowment disclosed holdings in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin ETF worth approximately $7.7 million in a recent SEC filing for the quarter ended March 31, 2026. According to Cointelegraph, the position marks a continuation of the endowment’s bitcoin exposure first reported in 2025, when it held more than $10 million in IBIT before price movements reduced the dollar value. Harvard, Brown, and Emory have made similar disclosures, establishing a pattern of Ivy League endowments using regulated ETF structures to access bitcoin within standard fiduciary frameworks. The ETF wrapper reduces custody complexity and keeps holdings inside familiar reporting systems — a structure that matters to conservative allocators with long time horizons. The disclosure arrived the same day the Clarity Act cleared the Senate Banking Committee, a pairing that illustrates how regulatory progress and institutional adoption are advancing in tandem.

The Human Rights Foundation distributed its Q1 2026 Bitcoin Development Fund grants across 26 projects, with a focus on tools that extend Bitcoin’s utility for journalists, activists, and nonprofit organizations operating under hostile governments. According to Bitcoin Magazine, one recipient is Bitcoin Core developer Naiyoma, who is working on improvements to make it harder to track nodes running across multiple network interfaces — work that “strengthens the privacy of Bitcoin’s most widely used software implementations.” HRF stated the initiative is designed to reinforce Bitcoin’s role as a tool for financial freedom, enabling human rights workers to more securely communicate, organize, and receive support globally through Bitcoin. The breadth of the grant portfolio — spanning 26 projects in a single quarter — underscores the degree to which the freedom-tech funding ecosystem has matured since HRF began its Bitcoin Development Fund in 2020, when grants were rare and recipients few.

Patrick Witt, executive director of the President’s Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, told the audience at Consensus Miami 2026 that a formal announcement on the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is coming “in the next few weeks,” marking the most concrete timeline the administration has offered since Trump signed the founding executive order 14 months ago. Witt declined to disclose current federal holdings but said the priority is to “get our own house in order” first, citing a recent exploit involving digital assets held by the U.S. Marshals. Per TheStreet Crypto, the reserve still requires congressional codification through either the BITCOIN Act in the Senate or a House companion from Rep. Nick Begich. The U.S. government is estimated to hold approximately 328,372 BTC as of February 2026, making it the largest known state holder of bitcoin globally. If the BITCOIN Act passes and Treasury begins purchasing, analysts estimate the first official acquisition could begin in Q4 2026 at a scale that would have no parallel in sovereign reserve history.

Payward, the parent company of crypto exchange Kraken, is cutting approximately 150 jobs and raising fresh capital at a $20 billion valuation as it rebuilds momentum toward a public listing, according to CoinDesk. The company confidentially filed a draft S-1 with the SEC in November, then paused IPO plans in March when market conditions deteriorated — a move that also cost CFO Stephanie Lemmerman her role. The restructuring is framed as an optimization effort ahead of the listing, running parallel to an aggressive acquisition push: Payward has spent roughly $2.65 billion acquiring NinjaTrader, derivatives platform Bitnomial, and stablecoin payments firm Reap. It also secured a master account with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, giving it direct access to U.S. payment rails that most crypto firms lack. With the Clarity Act now through Senate committee and the regulatory window widening, Kraken’s IPO story has new structural supports that weren’t in place when it filed last fall.
