Chun Wang, co-founder of F2Pool and the operator of a mining pool controlling roughly 11.3% of the global Bitcoin network hashrate, has been named Mission Commander for SpaceX’s first commercial human spaceflight to Mars. Reporting by Olivier Acuna in CoinDesk details a two-year mission profile targeting a 2026 launch window, including a circumlunar flyby within 125 miles of the lunar surface alongside Dennis and Akiko Tito, a high-altitude Mars flyby, and a complex return trajectory using SpaceX’s next-generation Starship V3 architecture. Wang’s personal bitcoin holdings are estimated to exceed $300 million. “The mission is crucial for the future transport of millions of tons of cargo and a million citizens to the Red Planet,” SpaceX stated in its announcement. Wang previously flew as a mission specialist on the Fram2 polar-orbit Dragon flight, making him the first known Bitcoin holder to reach space and now the first to assume a command role in deep space operations. His arc from early miner to Mars commander is a concrete demonstration of the long time-preference that Bitcoin’s founding culture has long described in theory but rarely seen lived out at this scale.

Taylor, founder of Split, told Lightning News that the bitcoin wallet he launched in January is still in early testing with a small local user base but that the product roadmap points squarely toward Lightning Service Provider infrastructure and merchant-operated payment nodes. “If we get this right we could open the door in the future for merchants to easily manage their own Bitcoin payments infrastructure free of any custodial service,” Taylor said. Split entered the market with the thesis that users want to protect themselves from inflation and reduce their dependence on the banking system, with Lightning as the execution layer. The interview reveals a company deliberately staying small to gather direct feedback, treating premature scaling as a product risk. The LSP and self-hosted node ambitions Taylor describes address a recognized gap: most merchants on Lightning today rely on third-party custodians for channel management, and the tooling for self-sovereign merchant payment routing is underdeveloped relative to the demand that circular economy advocates have mapped. Split’s word-of-mouth acquisition strategy and refusal to monetize before the core mechanics are proven reflect an approach to product development more common in open-source software communities than in wallet startups.

Lightning News reviewer Sam Clark published a hands-on assessment of the Bitaxe Gamma 601, a consumer-grade Bitcoin mining device from BitcoinMerch priced at $125 that achieves up to 1.2 terahash per second. Clark tested the unit from order to first block attempt, noting sub-week shipping, well-padded packaging with a dedicated slot for each component, and a compact form factor designed for home use rather than rack deployment. The Bitaxe line is built on the open-source Bitaxe hardware standard, making it the most accessible entry point for individual participants who want direct exposure to Bitcoin’s physical security layer. “BitcoinMerch was kind enough to send us their micro Bitcoin Miners, the Bitaxe Gamma 601,” Clark writes, describing a setup process accessible to non-technical users. At 1.2 TH/s, the device is not economically competitive with industrial mining at current difficulty levels, but its value is less about yield than participation: home miners distribute hashrate away from concentrated industrial operations, build operational familiarity with mining infrastructure, and maintain the cultural link between everyday Bitcoin holders and the proof-of-work system securing the network.

AQUA Wallet, the non-custodial bitcoin and Liquid wallet developed by JAN3, is adding Lightning Address support, a feature that allows users to receive Lightning payments at a human-readable identifier rather than generating a new invoice for each transaction. BTC Sessions highlighted the addition on X and announced that premium Lightning Address handles will be given to the ten best community replies explaining why AQUA is their preferred wallet or submitting a quality meme. Lightning Addresses are built on the LNURL-pay standard and make the experience of receiving a payment comparable to sharing an email address rather than managing raw payment requests. “Lightning Addresses are coming to AQUA Wallet,” Sessions wrote, amplifying the announcement from the JAN3 team. AQUA’s user base skews toward emerging market adoption and mobile-first users who prioritize ease of use alongside self-custody, making Lightning Address support a meaningful usability upgrade for the segment of the market where Lightning’s circular economy potential is most actively discussed. The addition continues AQUA’s expansion of the Liquid and Lightning feature set within a single non-custodial interface, narrowing the gap between bitcoin-native wallets and the convenience expectations of mainstream payment apps.
