The Human Rights Foundation has spotlighted Abdullah Ibhais, the former media manager for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup organizing committee, who was jailed after refusing to help cover up the exploitation of migrant workers. According to HRF, Jordanian authorities detained Ibhais, confiscated his passport, and silenced him before he could appear at the Oslo Freedom Forum, even though a United Nations Working Group had ruled his earlier Qatari imprisonment arbitrary. HRF said Ibhais “has already endured severe hardship for refusing to compromise the truth,” pointing to a case he also laid out in a Guardian op-ed. The episode shows why freedom technologists treat censorship resistance as practical infrastructure. When a regime uses sport to launder its reputation and seizes the documents that let a dissident travel, self-custodied communication and uncensorable publishing become the tools that keep a silenced account alive. Truth that cannot be confiscated is much harder to bury.

At The Bitcoin Conference 2026, Luxor Technology's Matt Williams broke down the AI and high-performance computing optionality now available to Bitcoin miners. The pitch is straightforward. The power contracts, land, substations, and cooling systems built to run hashing rigs can be redirected toward GPU and AI workloads, even though mining ASICs themselves cannot handle those jobs. Luxor pegs the global mining network at nearly 20 gigawatts of deployed data center capacity, with another 10 gigawatts of potential expansion, much of it in the United States. “We operate at the precise intersection of compute, energy, and infrastructure,” said Lauren Lin, Luxor’s head of hardware and software, describing why the firm now finances GPU purchases against existing hashrate. The takeaway is that a miner is really an energy and infrastructure business, and the most durable operators will treat hashing and AI hosting as two uses of the same megawatts.

Canaan, the Nasdaq-listed mining hardware maker, reported that its North American self-mining fleet reached a record energy efficiency of 17.9 joules per terahash in May, which chief executive Nangeng Zhang described as “our best regional fleet performance to date and an ~11% YoY growth.” According to the update carried by Grafa, the company’s global average efficiency improved to 23.7 J/TH, an all-in power cost near $0.043 per kilowatt-hour helped widen margins, and self-mining plus customer payments lifted its treasury to a record 1,867 BTC and 3,952 ETH. Beyond hashing, Canaan secured an 8 megawatt hash-to-heat contract with a Nordic district heating network and a follow-on hash board order from Tether. That combination is the post-halving survival playbook in miniature. Squeeze every joule, stack the harvested bitcoin rather than selling it, and turn waste heat into a second revenue stream by selling warmth to someone who needs it. Efficiency and heat reuse, working together.
