Security researcher John Scott-Railton has raised concerns about artificial intelligence agents inadvertently compromising end-to-end encryption through routine data sharing with cloud providers. Scott-Railton explained that AI productivity agents, both proprietary tools like Microsoft's Copilot and open-source alternatives, often transmit conversation data to companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI by default, creating "a permanent subpoena-able record" of private communications. "I trust you, but your AI agent is a snitch," he wrote, noting that users often connect these tools to encrypted messaging platforms without realizing the privacy implications for themselves or their contacts. Scott-Railton proposed several mitigation strategies, including standardized "X-No-Agents" flags that applications could emit to exclude AI agents, designated "agent exclusion zones" for encrypted apps, and a developer pledge requiring agents to declare themselves in conversations and obtain consent before sharing data. He emphasized that local-first processing should become the default to preserve users' mental models of device privacy and control.
