1. booth
Jeff Booth, founding partner of Ego Death Capital, opened the Bitcoin 2026 conference in Las Vegas with a keynote that reframed the entire bitcoin debate as a question of perception before economics. Speaking to a packed room, Booth argued that the core conflict is not between political systems but between two irreconcilable realities: a credit-based system that “can’t allow deflation” and a free market that mathematically requires it. “The natural state of the free market is deflation,” he told the audience, and any system that contradicts that is, in his word, “nonsense.” He organized today’s bitcoin landscape into four observer types -- those trapped in credit money, those chasing features in altcoins, those treating bitcoin as digital gold handed to Wall Street custodians, and those who recognize it as a neutral protocol stack building in layers, the way the internet built from 1969 forward mostly unnoticed. Booth placed himself firmly in the fourth camp, pointing to Lightning Network companies in his portfolio now processing billions in transactions per quarter as evidence the protocol is already working. His closing argument was less about price than participation: every node runner, every self-custody holder, every circular economy transaction is not a passenger but an active builder of an emergent system moving the world from scarcity to abundance.

MARA Holdings has agreed to acquire Long Ridge Energy & Power from FTAI Infrastructure for approximately $1.5 billion, gaining a 505 MW combined-cycle gas plant and 1,600 contiguous acres along the Ohio River that anchor what the bitcoin miner is positioning as a flagship AI infrastructure campus. The transaction increases MARA’s owned and operated power capacity by roughly 65 percent and is expected to add about $144 million in annualized adjusted EBITDA at less than $15 per megawatt-hour in all-in operating costs. Combined with MARA’s existing Hannibal data center, the site offers over one gigawatt of total capacity with line of sight to 600 megawatts of AI and critical IT loads. CEO Fred Thiel framed the logic plainly, calling power “the scarce input in AI” and noting the rarity of fully integrated energy, land, water, fuel and grid interconnection in a single location. Public miners are now vertically integrating into the AI compute stack.

A logic flaw in the Linux kernel’s algif_aead cryptographic module disclosed by Theori and Xint.io allows any unprivileged local user to gain root on virtually every Linux distribution shipped since August 2017, using a 732-byte Python script. Tracked as CVE-2026-31431 and named Copy Fail, the bug bypasses on-disk integrity tools by writing four controlled bytes directly into the page cache, which is what the kernel reads when loading binaries. Researchers confirmed Ubuntu, RHEL, SUSE, Amazon Linux and Debian all vulnerable in stock cloud kernels at disclosure. Coinkite founder NVK retweeted a reminder that “FreeBSD is not Linux and copyfail does not affect BSD even with Linux compat kernel modules loaded.” For node operators, hardware wallet users and self-custody infrastructure built on Linux servers, the disclosure underscores how shared-kernel multi-tenancy assumptions need rethinking. Hardware-or-VM boundaries, not container namespaces, hold the line.
-EDITOR·OP_DAILY4. conviction
A new lightning.news interview with builder Dave Lund frames Bitcoin not as software but as something closer to a natural law, with Lightning as the layer where that law expresses itself in everyday economic behavior. Lund told the publication that “living systems balance themselves under pressure,” and that recognizing this in Bitcoin’s monetary architecture changed how he approached building on the network. The piece is part of a longer-form profile series on Lightning developers and operators whose conviction predated the current institutional wave of attention. For freedom-tech audiences accustomed to the noise of price commentary and product announcements, builder voice journalism remains a rare and valuable signal. It captures the worldview underneath the protocol work, where Lightning is not a payments product to be marketed but the practical interface for treating Bitcoin as money. The builder layer is where the network’s long-term resilience is actually generated.
