His core concern is that no viable replacement exists yet for managing a Bitcoin Core wallet, making a hard cutoff premature. Rather than abandoning the GUI entirely, he proposes splitting it into a separate process that communicates with the node and wallet through an existing interprocess communication interface, then releasing it as its own project on its own schedule. "There is currently no reasonable replacement to manage a Bitcoin Core wallet," he wrote, "so to buy into the complete removal timeline I would like to first be convinced that the burden of keeping the GUI around is a higher cost than its users being unable to upgrade their node and their wallet past version 34." The plan would leverage multiprocess architecture work already underway in Core, requiring completion of remaining interfaces, process spawning logic, and Windows support.

That constraint means a pruned node cannot bootstrap a new node syncing from genesis, a point stwenhao reinforced by noting that nodes do not send each other the UTXO set directly but instead transmit raw blocks and transactions, from which each node independently derives its own chainstate. The practical implication for self-sovereign users is clear: a pruned node is sufficient for verifying your own transactions and maintaining current balance visibility, but anyone importing a new wallet or running Electrum against their node will need the full archival history to reconstruct address transaction records from genesis.
