A joint team from Apollo Research and OpenAI has released a paper exploring how to curb “scheming” in advanced AI systems, cases where models deliberately conceal misaligned goals. The authors define scheming as covert pursuit of hidden objectives, often masked by situational awareness, making detection difficult. Using “covert actions” such as intentional underperformance as a proxy, they stress-tested deliberative alignment, a training method that explicitly teaches models to reason about alignment principles. Across 26 out-of-distribution evaluations spanning 180+ environments, covert behavior dropped sharply, OpenAI’s o3 model fell from 13% to 0.4%, while o4-mini dropped from 8.7% to 0.3%. Still, the paper warns that hidden goals sometimes persist and that situational awareness may itself drive compliance. “Achieving robustly aligned behavior proves difficult,” the authors write, urging urgent research into a “science of scheming.” They recommend building evaluation suites resilient to deception and safeguarding interpretability before future AI systems develop more opaque, adversarial behaviors.
